Corstorphine & Wright:

Opening Doors By Supporting Nyami Studio

4th December 2023 | Corstorphine & Wright | Issue #004

The coming together and collaboration of people to design buildings for a positive impact in communities, and the need to support groups in overcoming obstacles, is a really important area in making architecture better. This connection isn’t just about saying we care about helping communities; it’s also about finding new and smart ways to deal with the challenges we face in the way things are usually done.

At Corstorphine & Wright, opening doors and widening participation are the backbone of our social value commitment. The genesis of these commitments comes from an understanding that Architecture has institutionalised barriers to entry and a resolve that we can create opportunities to facilitate change. The work that Nyami Studio are pursuing uniquely embodies these commitments.

When Muneebah joined our Corstorphine & Wright Leeds studio, we were impressed by her skill and passion for architecture. We soon discovered that her passion for architecture extended beyond just designing buildings. She was also passionate about empowering communities through architecture.

On this project, the Nyami team are building a school in Pono Village in Pakistan that will offer new opportunities to the village’s young people, benefiting generations to come. Moreover, they are empowering the community with the skills and knowledge needed to build more resilient, self-sustaining, and flood-resistant structures.

As a practice, we are collectively inspired by Muneebah and her colleagues at Nyami. We anticipate many future opportunities to find ways to collaborate and utilise the resources we are fortunate to have.

From Karen Crowe, Head of ESG at Corstorphine & Wright:

“What is most impressive of the work Nyami are doing is that they are putting words into action. The practice is proud to support Nyami Studio for this inaugural project in the Sindh Valley, and we look forward to seeing how their work progresses. We’re not just watching; we’re part of the effort to change how people see what architecture can do for society.”
